- Apple Unveils High-Performance Macintosh
-
-
- SAN JOSE, California—March 19, 1990—Apple Computer, Inc. today introduced the
- fastest Macintosh yet developed. The Macintosh IIfx is an extremely
- responsive and elegantly engineered personal computer that runs up to twice as
- fast as the Macintosh IIci. The system's speed derives from the carefully
- balanced integration of powerful new technologies, including a 40 MHz, Motorola
- 68030 processor/68882 coprocessor combination.
-
- "The Macintosh IIfx redefines what people can accomplish with a personal
- computer," said Randy Battat, vice president of Apple Worldwide Product
- Marketing. "Whether it's a productivity application or a specialized,
- computing-intensive task, the balanced performance of the IIfx will make
- everything about the way people use Macintosh even more responsive, more
- intuitive and more effective. Just as crucial, we think this new level of
- power will inspire completely new ways of using Macintosh personal computers in
- the coming decade."
-
- The high-performance of the Macintosh IIfx proceeds from the precise
- integration of powerful new technologies. The result is an extremely
- well-balanced system that exploits the extensive capabilities of each new
- component and maximizes overall system performance. This increase in
- performance allows people to get work done faster, use more powerful
- applications and realize new levels of creative potential.
-
- Macintosh IIfx computer's powerful new technologies fall into the following
- three groupings:
- - A faster processor and memory subsystem: The Macintosh IIfx incorporates a
- 40 MHz 68030 processor/68882 coprocessor combination. Additionally, a built-in
- 32K Static RAM cache and a latched-write design within the memory subsystem
- take full advantage of the Macintosh IIfx computer's 40 MHz capabilities. Both
- these technologies increase the speed with which the processor retrieves,
- reads, and writes information. The 32K Static RAM cache stores frequently used
- data and instructions, allowing the processor to access instructions and data
- with zero wait states. The new latched-write capability allows the 68030
- processor to read information from the cache concurrent with the storing of
- previous computational results to memory.
-
- Increased System Performance
- The 40 MHz clockspeed and optimized memory subsystem make everything about the
- way people use Macintosh more immediate. These new technologies enable
- Macintosh users to calculate, reformat, enlarge, search, resize, scroll, redraw
- and paint faster than they have ever been able to do before. Additionally,
- this new power allows Macintosh users to work with more powerful and innovative
- new applications.
-
- - An intelligent input/output subsystem: The Macintosh IIfx employs two new
- input/output processors (I/OPs) which are dedicated to controlling activities
- traditionally performed by the CPU's main processor, such as serial
- communications, floppy disk access and Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) processes.
- Additionally, a new Small Computer System Interface (SCSI)/Direct Memory Access
- (DMA) Controller accelerates system performance. This high-speed interface
- between the 68030 processor and SCSI devices also supports direct memory
- transfers on the Macintosh IIfx, thus reducing the time the 68030 spends on
- SCSI operations.
-
- Taken together, the I/OPs and SCSI/DMA Controller make system-peripheral
- interaction smoother, faster and more efficient as they free the 68030 from
- performing low-level routines. This means background tasks will become more
- transparent, including printing, network routing and storing data.
-
- - Richer expansion capabilities: As with the Macintosh II and the Macintosh
- IIx, the Macintosh IIfx comes with six industry-standard NuBus slots for
- maximum expandability. The Macintosh IIfx also has a high-performance
- Processor Direct Slot (PDS) that provides developers with transparent access to
- the system's high-performance 68030 processor bus.
-
- These extensive expansion capabilities give people a flexible platform upon
- which they can add selected functionality, like video cards, communication
- cards and coprocessor cards. Apple believes third parties will use the direct
- slot to create specialized cards that are closely coupled with the system's
- hardware.
-
- Product Design Improvements
- The Macintosh IIfx has an improved Macintosh II product design. The
- improvements include a quieter, variable speed fan and a new, ergonomically
- designed extended keyboard which is fully adjustable.
-
- Compatibility
- The Macintosh IIfx is compatible with virtually all Macintosh applications,
- even as it integrates a number of new technologies. This ability to innovate
- while retaining compatibility proceeds from the fundamental extensibility of
- the Macintosh architecture, which brings new capabilities to users as soon as
- they become available and without disruption.
-
- Product Family Position
- The Macintosh IIfx adds even more power to the broad Macintosh product family.
- It runs up to twice as fast as the 25 MHz 68030 Macintosh IIci (depending on
- the configuration of the Macintosh IIci) and up to four times faster than a 16
- MHz 68030 Macintosh IIcx.
-
- Customers
- Apple believes that anyone who wants high performance will be attracted to the
- Macintosh IIfx. This includes current Macintosh users who want even more power
- as well as users from all environments who do computing-intensive tasks across
- a broad range of uses. These tasks involve, among others, large financial
- models, animation, graphic design, page layout, and scientific and engineering
- activities.
-
- Macintosh II and Macintosh IIx customers can upgrade their systems to a
- Macintosh IIfx with a Macintosh IIfx Logic Board Upgrade kit, also announced
- today. Additionally, Macintosh IIfx-specific 4MB DRAM upgrade kits are also
- available immediately.
-
- Upgrades
- Suggested U.S. retail prices for the Macintosh IIfx are as follows, in the
- following standard configurations:
- - 4MB/SuperDrive version, $8,969
- - 4MB/80MB internal hard drive version, $9,869
- - 4MB/160MB internal hard drive version, $10,969
- - Macintosh IIfx Logic Board Upgrade, $2,999
- - Macintosh IIfx 4MB Memory Expansion kit, $999
-
